When the Birds Stop to Sing
It is a chilled Saturday afternoon around 3pm when suddenly a car pulls up at the
Monique’s
driveway set in a subway in Miami. Monique just buried her husband a week ago and she is friends with Cassie from high school. They work in the same telecommunications firm. Cassie gets off the car and inspects the back of the car for a little while before heading towards the house. She enters the house to find things in disarray, she calls out Monique but gets no response so, she decides to go to the bedroom. (Cassie gently flushing the toilet) Monique: (shouting) What have you done with my pills? I need them!
Cassie: No, I know you don’t need them. What you need is a
freshening up, some good meal and
a girl’s night out.
Monique: No! I am an adult and I know what I want or don’t want. Cassie: I clearly do understand that, but I can’t just sit back and watch you
ruin yourself right
after the death of your husband. Your kids need you the most right now…
Monique: (tears rolling down her cheeks) You d-d-
don’t understand…
Cassie: (pulling her closer in a hug)
I can’t pretend to know the grief of what you are going
through emotionally but I know you are a strong and resilient woman who can get past anything if she wants to. I know that Monique (gently patting her shoulders) Monique: (sobs quietly and holds Cass
ie’s hand) The doctor said I could use the anti
-depressants pills for some time. Cassie:
I know they are helping but at the moment you’re having too much drugs its derailing the stability of your brain. Come here…. (heading to the sitting area)
Monique: The pain is too much to bear. Cassie: You just need to go slow on yourself and allow yourself to grief without losing yourself. Monique: Speaking of kids, Michael and Betty should be home soon enough from their piano
and ballet classes. I still haven’t figu
red out how to forge forward.
Cassie: (phone ringing) Just a minute…
Monique: (after a brief moment)
How’s work been?
Cassie: We’ve had several changes implemented in the human resource department and people
are eagerly waiting for your leave to be over, especially Connor. I was speaking to Valarie
Monique: How’s she?
Cassie: She is fairing on well. She was confirming if we are still going out for dinner for the
girl’s night out
Monique: I don’t feel in the right mood to join you ladies
Cassie: I am going
to drag you out if I have to do so. You need some life. It’s Saturday and you
have been indoors for too long. Monique: I really appreciate your efforts during this time Cassie Cassie: Anytime girl. Come, let me help you pick your outfit as we wait for the nanny to arrive
to take care of the kids while you’re away
Monique: No problem, you know my taste Cassie:
(heading towards the closet) What do we have here…. Let’s see,
(An hour later) Monique: I like the shoes you chose for my outfit, very elegant! Cassie: Look at you, looking gorgeous as ever!
No more pills Monique. You’ll get through this,
okay? Monique: Well, I should be back home by midnight. Cassie
: Everything is set. We should head out now. Don’t worry about the kids, I have
everything sorted with the nanny. Monique: Thanks for your kindness to me Cassie.
Cassie: I got you girl! Let’s go rock the worries and grief away in the night!
Monique calls Valarie in the car while Cassie is driving, confirming their presence at the dinner in a few minutes.
