Written language is not spoken language, and so do spoken language is not written language. As Gerot and Wignell (1994: 158) say that written language does not refer to language which is written down. Likewise the term spoken language does not only refer to language which is said aloud. Moreover they say that spoken language tends to be complex grammatically intricate and written language tends to be complex lexically dense. From this statement, it could say that written language covers more complex lexically dense  2 than spoken one. It effects that people should be aware and careful of creating a text. Although most written languages get involve with lexically dense, they still keep aware of another aspect in order to make the text meaningful. This can be done through the arrangement of the text structurally and systematically which relates to grammar mastery. Writing is one of the most difficult skill (Linse, 2006: 24) is considered as the most difficult skill which involves some. They are content, grammar, form and style. What is meant by content is the substance of writing or the idea expressed. Grammar relates to the employment of grammatical form and significant pattern, while form is about the organization of content. Moreover, style relates to the choice of structures and lexical items to give a particular one to writing. b.   Research Question In relation of present study, there are some research questions as the following below : 1.   Is there a significant correlation between students’ m astery of Past Tense and their achievement in writing recount? 2.   To what extent does the students’ mas tery of Past Tense affect their achievement in writing recount?  3 c.   Purpose Of The Study In relation of present study, there are some research purposes as the following below : 1.   The correlatio n between students’ mast ery of the past tense and their achievement in writing recount. 2.   The extent to which students’ mastery of Past Tense affects their  achievement in writing recount d.   Variables A research is basically conducted in order to find out the relationship between two variables. The variables in investigated are independent and dependent variables. On this research, the independent variable is the mastery of simple past tense, and the dependent variable is students’ achievement in writing recoun t. e.   Hypotheses According to Riduan (2005: 42) there are two kinds of hypotheses. They are an alternative hypothesis (Ha) or often said working hypotheses (Hw) and Null hypotheses (Ho). The researcher propose a hypothesis that students’ mastery of simple past tense has significant correlation with their ability in using simple past tense in writing  4 recount (Hw). In other words, it can be formulated that Hypothesis working was stronger than Hypothesis Null or Hw > Ho. f.   Significance of the study The study about the correlation between students’ mastery of past tense and their achievement in writing recount hopefully will be useful to give some contributions to English language teaching and learning, i.e.: 1.   For teachers and teacher researchers, the finding of the research will inform them about grammatical components that need to be given emphasis to assist students to write a grammatically accurate recount text.   2.   For the students, they can be motivated to practice more than they did before and they are encouraged to learn grammar seriously so that they can work with various text types without much difficulty.   3.   For the readers, it can inform them about the correlation between students’ mastery of past tense and their achievement in writing recount.
