  • 2. When your business is dedicated to powering the world, you need to make sure your employees have powerful smartphones too. That’s one reason ABB Finland has deployed 2250 Nokia Lumia smartphones with their Finnish employees and why that number is steadily rising. Read on to find out more. Background ABB is one of the world’s biggest providers of power and automation technologies. This vast company, based in Zurich, Switzerland, employs over 145,000 people in 100 countries. In a history that spans more than 120 years, it’s developed or commercialized many of the technologies that underlie our modern society, from high-voltage DC power transmission to a revolutionary approach to ship propulsion. The Finnish arm has around 6600 employees working on everything from huge transformers and generators to small electrical drives. Such intricate works require the very best tools and that’s where Nokia Lumia comes in. Nokia Lumia - a diverse portfolio The Nokia Lumia family on Windows Phone 8 is growing month by month and, with more than half a dozen already available, there are plenty to choose from. Most of ABB Finland’s Nokia Lumia smartphones are 920s or 820s, but they’re also using 620s, 720s and 925s. “One important reason for choosing different devices is cost,” says ABB’s Interim Country CIO, Esa Pigg. “Lumia has several models and price categories and they all give you the same platform and same apps for a very reasonable price. We can now give our end-users much more than in the past, with the same budget. This is very good development.” US government. Add to this the fact that Nokia Lumia protects users from malware, by allowing only certified apps to be installed, and it’s easy to see why ABB Finland’s concerns have been allayed. Easier to keep in touch However, that’s not all the company has to take into account. With so many employees doing so many different types of work, ABB needs to help its staff stay organized and easily contactable. In the past, the company relied upon Lotus Notes Traveller for this function, but is now making the transition to Office 365. “Efficient mobile email and calendar synchronization is crucial to our business. We are implementing Office 365 globally and with Windows Phone 8 you can use the native email system easily. Plus there’s no subscription needed for Office 365 on a Lumia,” says Pigg. “In fact, since Windows Phone 8 became available we’ve been getting more and more Nokia Lumia smartphones.” “Lumia has several models and price categories and they all give you the same platform and same apps for a very reasonable price.” Esa Pigg, Interim Country CIO, ABB More secure environment As you’d expect from a company renowned for its incredible innovation, security is a key area of concern when deciding which smartphones to buy. “Security is very important at the moment,” says Pigg. “Out of the available options in the market we thought Nokia Lumia was one of the strongest”. Windows Phone 8 on Nokia Lumia smartphones has secure boot built in. This means the devices can only run with authentic software. What’s more, encryption protects all the data on the phone and in transit, one reason why Windows Phone 8 has gained security certification from the

We’re using the Microsoft ecosystem in our IT environment and it’s easier to use that with Windows Phone. It’s definitely an advantage. And, of course, HERE navigation apps are very good on Nokia devices.” A trusted partner in Elisa Another key reason why ABB is using Nokia Lumia smart- phones in Finland is the service provided by Finnish opera- tor, Elisa. Elisa Mobile Device service supplies Nokia Lumia devices to the company for a monthly fee. This package enables ABB users to get all the support for Nokia Lumias from one place, Elisa’s Customer Support. What’s more, if they have any issues they get a replacement within 48 hours anywhere in Finland. Elisa also provides maintenance and a care-line, which ABB employees can call 24 hours a day / 7 days a week from anywhere in the world. Furthermore, Nokia Expert Centre is a one-stop shop for expert advice on Nokia business mobility solutions, empow- ering Elisa Customer Support to maintain their high quality service. Happier employees With the Nokia Lumia portfolio fulfilling so many of ABB Finland’s business needs and Elisa providing such an outstanding service, it’s no surprise more and more employ- ees are choosing Nokia Lumia as their company smartphone. “People have the option to choose from a variety of different Nokia Lumia models, based on their needs for work and leisure” says Pigg. “Nokia Lumia smartphones are well built, they’re great value, they’re very easy to use with Microsoft services and they have great 4G coverage”, Pigg adds. And that’s not all. The range of Nokia Lumia colours has been given a big thumbs up as well. “The very first Nokia Lumia 920 in the company was red. One reason was because it’s the same colour as our logo,” says Pigg, smiling. “Nokia Lumia smartphones are well built, they’re great value, they’re very easy to use with Microsoft services and they have great 4G connectivity in several models.” Esa Pigg, Interim Country CIO, ABB Photo: ABB
