Anusha Pillai2015 Cyclone Yasi Cyclone Yasi was a tropical cyclone that hit theEastern Coast of Queensland in 2011. Itoriginated fro a tropical low near !i"i# untilreaching wind speeds up to 2$5%&h# and wasclassi'ed a Category 5 cyclone. Yasi was la(elled asa)tropical distur(ance on 2* th  +anuary# until itintensi'ed and was classi'ed a cyclone on,0 th  +anuary# 2011. !or cyclones to for# theteperature of the ocean has to (e o-er 2*degrees Celsius# as their energy is ta%en froheat and oisture. Cyclones start fro a lowpressure syste# when the air rises to forprecipitation and condensation in the iddle# and war# oist air rushes in underneathto replace it# and it fors a spiralling eect# which is caused the rotation of the Earth/Coriolis Eect and transfors into a cyclone due to its high speed winds. Economic Impacts Australia suered greatly in ters of econoics# as industries had already (eendesta(ilised and daaged (y the ha-oc wrea%ed (y the Queensland !loods of 2011#and they had "ust nearly reco-ered fro Cyclone arry in 200*. ne of the assi-eeconoic ipacts of Cyclone Yasi is its daage done to the (anana industry. It isestiated that up to $53 of (anana crops 4 -alued at ,00 illion 4 was wiped out#leading to s%yroc%eting prices in superar%ets around the country# as 6orthernQueensland was the ain producer of (ananas. 7ananas which had pre-iously cost 2 8, a %ilo# sold at 15 a %ilo# leading to angry consuers and general dissatisfaction.Cyclone Yasi also had a detriental ipact on the sugar industry in Australia# (eing thethird largest raw sugar e9porter in the world. :he areas aected (y Yasi produced ,03of the sugar in Australia and cost the industry an estiated 500 illion. As Pa%istan/large producer of sugar and Australia were una(le to produce sugar due to naturaldisasters# glo(al price hit the highest in thirty years# although they were already raiseddue to daage done (y the Queensland ;oods. Consuers in Australia were notaected# as <$3 of Australia=s sugar was e9ported# so this had no eect on the pricethat consuers paid. Yasi also daaged the coal industry# due to lac% of access toines# and ;ooded pits led to a loss of 2.5 (illion in e9port earnings# as there wasaround 15 illion tonnes less coal than norally e9ported. -er >1#000 clais wereade to insurance copanies in the wa%e of Cyclone Yasi# on top of the clais ade  Anusha Pillai2015after the ;oods# and insurance copanies were drained 'nancially# with any a%ingup to 1*81$3 lower than the pre-ious year. ?any sall (usinesses that relied ontouris for re-enue# and 6orthern Queensland too% in 1 in > tourists who -isitedAustralia. :he sustained edia co-erage of Cyclone Yasi and the pre-ious ;oods led tothe perception of a disaster @one# and led to a decrease in tourists which cost hundredsof illions of dollars. Environmental Impacts Cyclone Yasi had any en-ironentalipacts as well# especially to the reat7arrier Beef# where Yasi (arraged straightthrough. Appro9iately 1,3 of the reef wase9posed to Yasi# and coral had (eensnapped# (ro%en and tossed into deeperwaters. Another a"or en-ironental ipact Yasi had# was on two endangered species#the Cassowary and the ?ahogany lider# who relied on the ittoral Bainforest around :owns-ille for ha(itat. :he destructi-e winds daaged the rainforest# lea-ing the liderwith no shelter. p to 503 of the Cassowary=s ha(itat had (een destroyed# (utprecautions were already in play# as a result of Cyclone arry# which eant thatanials had a shelter until the rainforests fully reco-ered. :he cyclone also daaged(anana crops and sugar plantations. Social Impacts  Anusha Pillai2015Docially# Yasi also had any ipacts# with any people ha-ing their fars and cropsdestroyed. uc%ily# Yasi did not greatly daage :owns-ille or Cairns# or the casualtyrate would ha-e (een -ery high. :he areas in which it aected were ainly tourist andfaring land. :he touris industry was -ery uch aected# as any sall (usinessesrelied on touris for oney. :he cyclone and the pre-ious ;oods ga-e the ipressionthat Queensland was always ha-ing natural disasters. Yasi also led to 1>0#000 poweroutages all o-er the state. Although the cyclone daaged the land# there were nodeaths /only one indirect death and it had at least onepositi-e outcoe. All o-er the country# people followedthe cyclone as it happened# and ga-e support in thefor of 'nancial aid# or siply sending essagesthrough social edia. It ga-e -ictis a chance toconnect with strangers# and people (anded together toco(at the cyclone. Efectiveness o Responses  :he go-ernent had warning a couple of days (efore the cyclone struc%# as it had (een(rewing near !i"i for uite a tie. :he go-ernent was -ery positi-e throughout thewhole cyclone# with no censorship of the intensity or the daage that could (ewrea%ed. It is (elie-ed that it is for this reason# that there were no direct deaths. 7y thetie it crossed into the Australian (order# preparations were well under way# and anye-acuations had (een ade. People were e-acuated out of towns# and soe anialsairlifted out of forest. E9tra ;ights were ade so there would not (e a shortage forpeople who had to lea-e their region. :he 6DF DED and the Australian Gefence !orcewas dispatched and sent to Queensland to help with the situation and the generalclean8up. Appro9iately H5> illion dollars was spent (y the Australian go-ernentto help counities regain their footing# H20 illion of it spent on eergencypayents. :he go-ernent also raised 2>, illion dollars through donations thatwere put to the cause. :he Australian Bed Cross launched a fundraiser that ga-e peopleall o-er the country to (e a(le to donate to those suering in Queensland. Gue to thee9tensi-e edia co-erage# any people donated and this led to a steady reco-ery of the daage done. 7ecause the touris industry in Queensland too% such a (low# hea-yad-ertising cae into play. :he go-ernent funded any pro"ects that ad-ertisedQueensland as a place for holidays# and this was e9treely eecti-e# as Cairnsrecei-ed 1>00 Chinese -isitors "ust two days after Yasi hit. :here was also the generalsupport of people all o-er the country who sent any essages and any help theycould in order to help those that were suering. All in all# it can (e said that thego-ernent did an e9ceptional "o( at co(ating# or at least softening the (low of thecyclone. Although there was a lot of daage# uch of it could not (e pre-ented.  Anusha Pillai20157ecause of the e9cellent "o( the go-ernent did in preparing for the cyclone and notcensoring the aount of daage it could do# they successfully e-acuated people andga-e the sense of urgency that they needed for people to cooperate. People froaround the country were uic% to help# and this led to a -ery speedy reco-ery for anypeople in Queensland. -erall# the responses that were gi-en were e9treely eecti-ein helping people who suered fro Cyclone Yasi.
