Integratin f technlgies has the ptential t engage students in ways nt previusly pssible, t enhance their achievement, t create new learning pssibilities and t extend students interactin with their lcal and glbal cmmunities. Unley High Schl is a technlgy-rich envirnment, integrating technlgy int all teaching and learning areas t enhance learning and t prepare ur students fr their rles in the digital wrld in which we live. Tday s generatin f students view technlgy as part f their everyday envirnment. T fully meet students learning needs, technlgy shuld be pervasive, engaging and reliable. T achieve this, Unley High Schl is currently implementing a range f new and innvative appraches t teaching and learning using new and emerging learning technlgies. Ultimately, we aim t achieve a 1-t-1 teaching and learning envirnment. The fcus n the use f new technlgies in the teaching and learning at Unley High Schl, means it is necessary t establish apprpriate plicies and prcedures. Whilst prviding the pprtunity t enhance and extend human interactin, empathy and understanding, the misuse f infrmatin and cmmunicatin technlgies can significantly damage an individual s dignity. Therefre, it is a requirement that all students and their caregivers read and abide by the schl s Acceptable Use f Learning Technlgies Plicy. Further, it is a Department f Educatin and Child Develpment (DECD) requirement that all students and their caregivers sign the Acceptable Use f Learning Technlgies Plicy befre the student is permitted t access learning technlgies n any Departmental Schl site. Once signed and returned t schl, the dcument is filed in the student s recrds and acknwledged in the schl s database. This agreement then remains valid and in place fr the duratin f the student s enrlment at Unley High Schl r until it is reviewed r revked by the schl. 1.2: Cyber-Safety Unley High Schl recgnises the need fr students t be safe and respnsible users f digital technlgies. We believe that explicitly teaching students abut safe and respnsible nline behaviur is essential and is best taught in partnership with parents/caregivers. We request that parents/caregivers wrk with us and encurage such behaviur at hme. 1.3: Our Respnsibilities At Unley High Schl we: Supprt the rights f all members f the schl cmmunity t engage in and prmte a safe, inclusive and supprtive learning envirnment. Have an Acceptable Use f Learning Technlgies Plicy that clearly states ur schl s values and the expected standards f student behaviur, including actins and cnsequences fr inapprpriate behaviur. Educate ur students t be safe and respnsible users f digital technlgies. Raise ur students awareness f issues such as nline privacy, intellectual prperty and cpyright. Supervise students when using digital technlgies fr educatinal purpses. Prvide an in-schl (in Netwrk) filtered Internet service but acknwledge that full prtectin frm inapprpriate cntent can never be guaranteed. Respnd t issues r incidents that have the ptential t impact n the wellbeing and reputatin f ur students, staff and the schl. Knw that sme nline activities are illegal and as such we are required t reprt this t the plice. 3 Prvide parents/caregivers with a cpy f this agreement. Supprt parents/caregivers t understand the imprtance f safe and respnsible use f digital technlgies, the ptential issues that surrund their use and strategies that they can implement at hme t supprt and prtect their child. 1.4: Behaviur and Learning Expectatins The Unley High Schl Student Learning Cde and Student Behaviur Cde frm the basis f the expectatins that we have f ur students as learners and their behaviur as members f the schl cmmunity. These cdes are published in the Student Planner and reprduced here, in this Learning Technlgy Package, t reaffirm the cre values f Unley High Schl. Our expectatins f students as learners: Learning in all its frms is the fundamental purpse f ur schl. Unley High Schl has a strng recrd f academic achievement. We have a clear set f expectatins f ur students as learners: Students will be rganised. Students will cperate with their teachers. Students will be engaged with their learning. T ensure that all students and staff can wrk within a safe, supprtive and prductive envirnment, the schl has a clear set f expectatins f its students: Students will accept respnsibility fr their behaviur and the cnsequences that flw frm that behaviur and, where apprpriate, they will engage in restrative justice practices t redress the impact f their behaviur. Students will interact with their fellw students and the schl staff in a psitive manner. Students will behave accrding t the eths and values f the schl. The Unley High Schl Cmmunity actively prmtes a schl eths whereby its students will: Pursue excellence, be cnfident in themselves and prtect their wn health. Care fr and be hnest in their dealing with thers, understand and practise ethical behaviur and accept respnsibility fr their behaviur. Respect and nt interfere with r damage ther students wrk, equipment r prperty. 1.5: Scial Netwrking Scial media (smetimes referred t as scial netwrking) are nline services and tls used fr publishing, sharing and discussing infrmatin. The list f scial media types is extensive with new and innvative scial media sites being develped almst every day. It is imprtant t understand that scial netwrking can ccur in pen and clsed nline cmmunities. An pen cmmunity n the web is visible t everyne wrldwide. It is pssible t have a clsed cmmunity which restricts infrmatin and cmments t a specific grup f peple. The fllwing list is a guide t the types f scial media at the time f develping this plicy: Scial netwrking sites are websites that allw yu t create a persnal prfile abut yurself and then chat and share infrmatin with thers such as family and friends. Fr example: Facebk, Edmd, MySpace, LinkedIn, Yammer. Vide, audi and pht sharing websites are sites that allw yu t uplad and share vides, sunds and phts, which can be viewed and/r heard by web users the wrld ver. Fr example: Flickr, YuTube, itunesu, Vime, SundClud. Blg, shrt fr web lg, is a kind f nline diary where yu regularly pst abut yur life, yur hbbies, business, news r ther interests. It is a way f having yur wn space in the virtual wrld. Fr example: WrdPress, Blgger, EduBlgs. Micrblgging Apps are websites that pst micrblg-like psts t annunce what yu are currently ding. Fr example: Twitter, Yammer, Tumblr. 5 Lcatin-based Apps, als knwn as Gelcatin, are applicatins with the capability t detect and recrd where yu and ther peple are lcated. Wikis are websites where users create, edit and share infrmatin abut a particular subject r tpic. Fr example: Wikipedia and Wikispaces. Online gaming (sites) are games played ver sme frm f cmputer netwrk and are ften based arund a cmmunity f users. Sme multiplayer vide games are capable f supprting hundreds f thusands f players simultaneusly and usually feature at least ne persistent wrld. Examples f games include Steam, Call f Duty (COD), Wrld f Warcraft. News aggregatrs prvide a list f the latest news stries published by users frm a range f different web sites. Fr example: Digg, Zite. Ning is an nline platfrm fr peple and rganisatins t create custm scial netwrks arund specific interests. Ning ffers the ability t create an invited clsed cmmunity website which can be custmised t feature sets such as frums, blgs, phts and vides. Frums, message bards, nline discussin sites allw yu t hld cnversatins in the frm f psted messages. Examples are Whirlpl, Frumtin, Pwer Bards, Ggle Mderatr. 1.6: Games in Educatin Accrding t a recent paper by the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT), games, when develped crrectly and used apprpriately, can engage players in learning that is specifically applicable t schl curriculum and teachers can leverage the learning in these games withut disrupting the wrlds f either play r schl. (e-schl News, 2009). At Unley High Schl teachers may, at times, incrprate games int their teaching and learning prgram. In these situatins, playing games during class time, in accrdance with teacher directin, is permitted. 1.7: Security, Damage and Insurance The use f technlgy, whether wned by Unley High Schl r student-wned devices, entails persnal respnsibility fr the user. Apprved use f devices by users during the instructinal day is restricted t educatin related purpses. It is expected that users will cmply with Unley High Schl s Student Learning Cde, Student Behaviur Cde and the Acceptable Use f Learning Technlgies Plicy. Respnsibility t keep privately wned devices secure rests with the individual wner. Unley High Schl and its staff are nt liable fr any device stlen r damaged at schl. If a device is stlen r damaged, it will be handled thrugh administrative prcedures in the same manner as ther persnal prperty that is impacted in similar situatins. Persnal devices wned by students and teachers, are nt cvered by schl r Gvernment insurance plicies fr lss r damage incurred n site r during transprt t and frm ur site. We encurage yu t cntact yur husehld cntents insurance cmpany and arrange fr yur device t be cvered under yur persnal plicy. 1.8: Glssary f Terms Definitin f Digital Technlgies This Learning Technlgies Acceptable Use Agreement applies t digital technlgies, scial media tls and learning envirnments established by ur schl r accessed using schl wned netwrks r systems, including (althugh are nt limited t): ICT equipment/devices, as mentined in this dcument, includes but is nt limited t: Cmputers (such as desktps, laptps,ipads, netbks, PDAs, BYOD devices) bth schl wned and student wned. Strage devices (such as USB and flash memry devices, CDs, DVDs, flppy disks, ipds, MP3 players). 6 Cameras (such as vide and digital cameras and webcams). All types f mbile phnes. Gaming cnsles. Vide and audi players/receivers (such as prtable CD and DVD players). And any ther, similar, technlgies. and instant messaging. Internet and Intranet. Vide and pht sharing websites (e.g. Picasa, Yutube). Blgs. Micr-blgs (e.g. Twitter). Frums, discussin bards and grups (e.g. Ggle grups, Whirlpl). Wikis (e.g. Wikipedia). Vdcasts and pdcasts. Vide cnferences and web cnferences. There are a number f imprtant terms used in and/r related t this dcument: Children and students dentes all learners enrlled in DECD schls and preschls wh are minrs. Parent used thrughut this dcument refers t natural parents, legal guardians and caregivers. ICTs in this dcument refers t infrmatin and cmmunicatin technlgies. Cyber-safety refers t the safe use f the Internet and ICT equipment/devices, including mbile phnes. Cyber bullying is bullying which uses e-technlgy as a means f victimising thers. It is the use f an Internet service r mbile technlgies - such as , chat rm discussin grups, instant messaging, webpages r SMS (text messaging) - with the intentin f harming anther persn. Examples include cmmunicatins that seek t intimidate, cntrl, manipulate, put dwn r humiliate the recipient. Digital ftprints are traces left behind by smene s activity in a digital envirnment. These traces can be analysed by a netwrk manager r the plice. Sexting is where a persn takes a sexually-explicit digital phtgraph f him r herself r f smene else, and sends it as an MMS and SMS via a mbile phne. These images can then be psted n the Internet r frwarded electrnically t ther peple. Once psted n the Internet these images can leave a permanent digital ftprint and be accessed at any time in the future. It is illegal t take sexual phts r vides f children and yung peple. Scial netwrking sites ffer peple new and varied ways t cmmunicate via the Internet, whether thrugh their cmputer r mbile phne. These sites allw peple t easily and simply create their wn nline page r prfile and t cnstruct and display an nline netwrk f cntacts, ften called friends. Users are able t build a netwrk f cnnectins that they can display as a list f friends. These friends may be ffline actual friends r acquaintances, r peple they knw r have met nly nline, and with whm they have n ther link. Scial netwrking sites are nt limited t messaging, cmmunicating and displaying netwrks. Nearly all sites allw users t pst phts, vide and ften music n their prfiles and share them with thers. Schl and preschl ICT refers t the schl s r preschl s cmputer netwrk, Internet access facilities, cmputers, and ther ICT equipment/devices as utlined in the Definitin f Digital Technlgies. Inapprpriate material in this dcument means material that deals with matters such as sex, cruelty r vilence in a manner that is likely t be injurius t children r incmpatible with a schl r preschl envirnment. 7 E-crime ccurs when cmputers r ther electrnic cmmunicatin equipment/devices (eg Internet, ipads, mbile phnes) are used t cmmit an ffence, are targeted in an ffence, r act as strage devices in an ffence. Fr examples f what cnstitutes an e-crime, please refer t the Cyber Bullying, E-crime and the Prtectin f Children parent brchure available frm DECD (www.decd.sa.gv.au/dcs/.../1/cyberbullyingecrimeandthe.pdf ). Plagiarism is taking the ideas, images, writings r wrk f thers and presenting them as if they were yur wn. It ccurs when students cpy and use the wrks f thers, specifically including thse they find n the Internet. All surces f infrmatin and media must be acknwledged. Netiquette is Internet etiquette. Smetimes being annymus n the Internet causes peple t frget themselves in what is really a public place. Written wrk shuld nt cntain any inapprpriate language r images. Users shuld be aware that it is nt ethically acceptable r respnsible t send t smene and make it lk like it came frm anther persn s accunt. It is als inapprpriate t lg nt the Internet under smene else s username and pretend t be that persn, r t lk int ther peple s files withut permissin. BYOD means Bring Yur Own Device. Students in Senir Schl (Years 10, 11 and 12) are encuraged t bring their wn device (PC laptp r Apple MacBk) t schl fr use as a tl t supprt their learning. Sectin 2: Learning Technlgies, Acceptable Use 2.1: Cyber-Safety Unley High Schl will: Reinfrce the fact that the agreement is taken seriusly and is part f the partnership between schl and hme. D its best t enhance learning thrugh the safe use f Learning Technlgies. This includes wrking t restrict access t inapprpriate, illegal r harmful material n the Internet r n Learning Technlgies equipment/devices at schl r at schl-related activities. Wrk with children and their families t encurage and develp an understanding f the imprtance f cyber-safety thrugh educatin designed t cmplement and supprt the Use Agreement initiative. This includes prviding children with strategies t keep themselves safe in a cnnected nline wrld. Clearly describe strategies fr persnal safety and privacy (eg children and students must nt give ut identifying infrmatin nline, use nly their first name, and nt share their hme address, telephne number r any ther persnal infrmatin). Outline the expectatin that Unley High Schl students take increasing respnsibility fr their wn actins by agreeing t use DECD Learning Technlgies in a respnsible manner, but with parents/caregivers acknwledging n the agreement the respnsibility their student undertakes. Respnd t any breaches in an apprpriate manner. Include the ptential cnsequences f unacceptable use, such as remval f access t Learning Technlgies n site, suspensin r exclusin frm schl r referral t the Suth Australian Plice (SAPOL). Welcme enquiries at any time frm parents/caregivers/legal guardians r children abut cybersafety issues. Unley High Schl student respnsibilities include: Reading this Acceptable Use f Learning Technlgies Plicy carefully. Fllwing the cyber-safety strategies and instructins whenever using the schl s Learning Technlgies. 8 Fllwing the cyber-safety strategies whenever using privately wned Learning Technlgies devices n the schl site r at any schl related activity, regardless f its lcatin. Aviding any invlvement with material r activities that culd put at risk their wn safety, r the privacy, safety r security f the schl r ther members f the schl cmmunity. Taking prper care f schl Learning Technlgies. Knwing that if they have been invlved in the damage, lss r theft f Learning Technlgies equipment/devices, they and/r their family may have respnsibility fr the cst f repairs r replacement.
