Tech. projects for IIT Delhi students and young interns My postdoctoral work is focused on developing a unique process involving integrated fermentation and catalysis to produce high-value chemicals and fuels from biomass, with a special emphasis on preparation and characterization of heterogeneous catalyst, reaction optimization and understanding reaction mechanism using both experimental and computational studies. In this work, I have identified a novel biomass-derived platform molecule, which is 6-amyl- α -pyrone (6PP), recently highlighted as our publication on the front cover of the journal, Green Chemistry. I have developed routes for catalytic transformation of 6PP into food-additives, flavoring agent, fuels, polymers and pharmaceutical precursors. The work has resulted in the filing of 3 patents including 2 book chapters and 5 journal articles. PhD Research, University of Delhi, India (May 2011  –   August 2014) PhD Student Thesis: Catalysis for biomass conversion to value added chemicals Supervisor:  Dr. Basudeb Saha  Responsibilities: Screening of metal salts as catalyst for sugar conversion Design and develop solid acid catalyst for green commodity chemical production Synthesis and characterization of ionic liquid for sugars and raw biomass conversion   Catalysis for waste to value added product formation   Understanding catalysis using FTIR, XRD, TEM, SEM, TGA/DTA, NMR, GC, GCMS, HPLC, UV-Vis techniques   My Ph.D. thesis work is focused on important issues of catalysis related with the adding values to the waste biomass and replacing fossil fuel with green alternatives. Considering bagasse, non-edible mushrooms and weed species as sustainable feedstocks, and metal salts, ionic liquids, metal phosphate as effective catalysts, a new route for fine chemicals production is developed. An interdisciplinary approach to catalysis and agriculture (for biomass utilization) is implemented to obtain high-value chemicals from low-value and high volume substrates. Acidic ionic liquids and solid acid catalysts were prepared, characterized and thoroughly studied for hydrolysis and dehydration of lignocellulosic biomass to address the basic problems of obtaining clean chemicals and fuels. Under optimized condition, both processed and unprocessed biomass resulted to give 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF), which is a building block molecule for making bio-gasoline (2,5-dimethylfuran and 5-ethoxymethylfurfural, EMF) and biopolyester PET (furandicarboxylic acid). In order to produce fuels and value-added chemicals, HMF along with raw biomass and optimized catalyst have experimented for etherification reaction and significant yield of EMF and ethyl levulinate were obtained as biofuel. The developed methods, catalysts and mechanisms of my thesis work gives a better understanding of current catalytic process on biomass and provide a guidance in the development of successful biorefinery for sustainable future.   Post-M.
